Christ on the Cross
This picture, recently restored, is a revelation. Backer, one of the most gifted painters of his generation, was clearly influenced by Rembrandt and his Mas-d’Agenais Christ here. Yet he could not bring himself to adopt Rembrandt’s vision of an unbeautiful Christ, preferring the traditional image of graceful slenderness in abandonment.
