Christ on the Cross
Dated the same year as Rembrandt’s Mas-d’Agenais Christ, Jan Lievens’ portrayal of the Savior clearly sought to emulate it, and reflects the extraordinary artistic symbiosis between the two young men. Recent reevaluations of Lievens’ work have attributed some of Rembrandt’s innovations to him. But here it seems that Lievens was having more difficulty in discarding the image of Christ glorious in death.
