Introduction

Holy Face Held by Two Angels

One of the tours de force of the greatest etcher of the German Renaissance was to have conveyed on paper the texture of the cloth on which Christ’s face left its imprint—a face whose regular features, beard, and long hair comply entirely with tradition. As a sublimated hymn to Christ’s pain, this engraving seems unsurpassable. Even for Rembrandt?
