Introduction

The Risen Christ between Saints Andrew and Longinus

On the left, Saint Andrew with his cross, and on the right, Saint Longinus with the spear that pierced Christ’s side. In the middle, the risen Christ is blessing them, with the open tomb attesting to his resurrection and the Roman helmet alluding to the guards who have fled. Mantegna’s portrayal of an all-powerful, other-worldly Christ is almost an écorché.
