Introduction

Christ Presented to the People (Ecce Homo)

The crowd surrounding Jesus here is not asking for help but demanding that the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, put him to death. In his suggestive rendition of the scene’s urban setting, Rembrandt shows his talent for depicting architecture. Although pursuing the tradition of the great engravers of the former Spanish Netherlands, such as Lucas van Leyden, his individualization of each figure is all his own.
